I am so grateful I took the Recovering Our Families online course. For the first time since my son’s diagnosis, I felt a sense of hopefulness and community. I learned that love heals and is greater than fear. I learned how to connect with my son, which meant not trying to fix, diagnose or judge him, but simply loving and accepting him for who he was in the moment. I learned to move away from the construct that something was “wrong” with him and to appreciate that these ‘extreme states’ happen when people are transitioning to becoming adults – that a big part of recovery is separating from one’s parents and learning how to take care of oneself. I learned to set boundaries and find a balance between giving too little/too much support and to be careful about power struggles and offering advice. I realized that I needed to recover as much as my son.

This course was so helpful for me. We had a very difficult start to the fall with our daughter. She was going through a tough period and needing some help around learning how to manage her powerful emotions. This course was extremely helpful! Firstly, by introducing Turnaround people, then by learning about how to communicate in an effective manner and finally by developing clear boudaries in our home. Because of this we are now enjoying a beautiful new kind of relationship with our daughter.
Thank you!!

This is a great place to understand one’s role as a family member as opposed to a “gatekeeper” for someone else. It permits one to explore one’s own feelings and experiences while developing a survival strategy. The focus is not on the family member’s loved one, rather it is on the family member themselves. This helps to foster hope and develop specific strategies.
It really opened my eyes to what my daughter has to go through and now I have a new perspective on the way I look at this.
